What is The Daily Sacrifice?

by Randy Peterson

I have felt for years that the daily sacrifice has something to do with our relationship with Y’shua and His work in Heaven for us. But it has puzzled me how satan could remove what our Savior is doing. The concepts emerging lately as to what the daily sacrifice might be, have brought me back to that consideration for another look, and I am excited to share a much broader picture which Yah has opened before me!

I will attempt to depict this view by replacing words used in the KJV with alternate meanings from Strong’s (in green), along with explanatory insertions (in red).

Daniel 8:
9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.
10 And it waxed great, even to the army H6635 of heaven; and it made H5307 some of the army H6635 and of the stars H3556 (angelic host) to fall H5307 to the ground H776, and stamped H7429 upon them (satan being the power or puppeteer behind the Papacy).
11 Yea, he magnified H1431 himself even to the (position of Michael the true) prince/captain H8269 of the army H6635, and by him the continual H8548 (worship of/relationship with the Creator) was taken H7311 away H7311, and the basis H4349 (of trustworthiness) of his (God as our) asylum/refuge H4720 was cast H7993 down (in the minds of men).
12 And an army H6635 was given him against the continual H8548 (worship of the Creator) because of rebellion H6588, and it cast down the truth (about God) to the ground (in their thinking); and it practiced, and prospered.
13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision, the (assault on the) continual H8548 (relationship), and the desolating H8074 rebellion H6588, to give both the (faith in God as our) holy place H6944 (of safety) and the army H6635 (of God possessing that faith) to be trodden under foot?
14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred evenings mornings H6153-H1242; then shall the (truth of God as our) holy place H6944 be (proven) right H6663. (See Rev. 21:22)
15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.
16 And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.
17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

Daniel 11:
30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and be enraged H2194 against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
31 And forces H2220 shall be employed by him H5975, and they shall pollute H2490 (in the minds of men) the holy refuge H4720 of strength H4581, and (thereby) shall pluck away H5493 the continual H8548 (sacrificial worship relationship with the Creator), and they shall put H5414 (in its place) the filth of idolatry H8251 (and creature worship) that causes desolation H8074 (by separation from God).

I hope at this point you can sense my struggle to find the right words to represent what I’m coming to believe the daily sacrifice is all about. I can only wish so many words were not necessary to accomplish this. Since my mind sees best through comparisons and parallels, I will share those below in as few words as I can manage; and hopefully the picture I see will become evident.

The closest contextual parallel concerning this is found in Daniel 9:26-27. Here it says that Messiah would “confirm the covenant with many” and “cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease.” Both of these actions should be understood to be spiritual as the Jews did not cease the animal sacrifices until Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. From Heaven’s point of view, Messiah “took away” the Old Covenant blood and related sacrifices, along with the attending fleshly ministration in His death on the cross. With all the Scripture says concerning the old and new covenants, we can know the transfer is from flesh to Spirit. In this light, the “confirming” (strengthening) of the covenant referred to here must be the The New Covenant. Paralleling that with Daniel 8:11 we find that (in the last days) satan also succeeds in taking away a “daily sacrifice.” This is stated to be in conjunction with a rage against and forsaking of Yah’s holy covenant (Daniel chapter 11:30). Understanding the New Covenant to be spiritual, we can know this end time battle will be of a spiritual nature.

What Messiah does by dismantling (see Eph. 2:14) the Old Covenant ministration of flesh, and replacing it with the New Covenant spiritual ministration (see II Cor. 3), satan strives to reverse. His aim is to draw men’s hearts away from the New Covenant gospel relationship with Yah, and either hold or return them to the Old Covenant fleshly mindset. This mindset is essentially the lie he told in Eden - that man was already equal to Yah and therefore could be (or is) sufficiently righteous on his own. Perhaps the translation “daily sacrifice” isn’t too far off after all. But, there are more comparisons to be made in Scripture.

Let’s look next at the opposite aspects of the old and new covenants as found in Paul’s letters:

Old Covenant New Covenant
Carnally administered
Earthly place of meeting
Led by Moses
Animal blood sacrifices
Thought by fleshly Israel to be by works
Priesthood - line of Levi
Spiritually administered
Heavenly place of meeting
Led by Y’shua
Messiah’s blood sacrifice
Known by Spiritual Israel to be by faith
Priesthood - line of Melchizedek

Now let’s look at the most prominent opposites in the first and third angels’ messages in Revelation 14:

Side of Good Side of Evil
Worship of the Creator
Understood mark is the Sabbath
Followers of Yah have cheerful endurance
Worship of the beast (creature)
Understood mark is Sunday Worship
Followers of satan have torment

These two comparisons outline what satan hates the most and what he wants to cause the world to accept in order to separate all from Yah. Listed next, are three of the attributes of Yah which satan seeks to obliterate in the minds of men. These attributes are inherent in the meanings of words used in Daniel 8 and 11 concerning the daily sacrifice.

• Relational - “know their God” (Daniel 11:32) - wants to be our husband
• Refuge - “sanctuary” (Daniel 8:11-13; 11:31) - II Sam. 22:3; Ps. 9:9; 46:1; 91:2; Isa. 8:14; Jer. 17:12; Rev. 21:22
• Fortress - “strength” (Daniel 11:31) - A strong fortress - “shelter,” “strong tower,” “stronghold” Ps. 18:2; 61:3; Prov. 18:10; Micah 4:8

Other Interpretations of the Daily Sacrifice

One of the most exciting aspects of my understanding of the daily sacrifice is the larger picture it reveals. It includes three other concepts being discussed in the application of Daniel 8 to the “time of the end” before us. Those three are the Sabbath, our times of offering prayer, and the scepter/dominion. I have not yet heard these explained by those suggesting their being the sacrifice; but from what I already understand, I see them all to be inseparable parts of our saving relationship with YHVH. Next, I will attempt to show this from Scripture for each concept:

• The Sabbath is continual from creation through eternity. Isaiah 66:23-24 certainly upholds its eternal status. Being a memorial of our creation (Ex. 20:8-11) and a sign of our redemptive recreation/sanctification (Ex. 31:13), it will always hold a deep significance to the redeemed. This therefore, places it in the crosshairs of satan’s hatred, to whom it is a perpetual reminder that he was also created, that he cannot create anything but chaos, and that he is restlessly and hopelessly mad.

• Our regular prayers are freewill offerings to Yah and are at the heart of our relationship with Him. Being typified by the incense burned on the golden altar, the smoke from which rose as a sweet savor to YHVH, the prayers of praise and dependent supplication of the truly penitent and surrendered believers are captured and precious to Him. In counter distinction to those prayers, the curses and vile accusations of those who worship the beast/creature, from which Yah turns away and lets ascend up for ever and ever (Rev. 14:9-11). Being one more contrast which satan despises, it is little wonder then that we are admonished to pray without ceasing (I Thess. 5:17)!

• The scepter of dominion has never really left the hand of our Sovereign King (Ps. 145:13)! (S)atan’s claim to ownership of Earth is twisted, wishful thinking, and foolish at best. Yah’s letting satan use this earth as a stage, to demonstrate his claim that he can run things better than Yah, does not give him title to the theater. Scripture reminds us, “The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof” (Ps. 24:1; 50:12). Thankfully, Yah’s ownership of Earth, too, is continual. Though Adam was given a “dominion” (Gen. 1:26) of stewardship, he never had right of ownership. Therefore, satan’s dominion can be no more than was Adam’s. To top that off, Y’shua as the “last Adam” (I Cor. 15:45) purchased back, with His blood, the dominion the first Adam lost. (Eph. 1:19-23) Much to the delight of the redeemed, Y’shua will return as their reigning King, and His dominion will be “even to the ends of the earth” (Zech. 9:10). This too satan hates!

Because satan hates Yah yet knows he cannot touch Him nor stop what He is working in our behalf, his last ditch effort is to keep us from being restored back into His image. This effort consists of attempting to seduce mankind into thinking that Yah isn’t who He claims to be. Our response of surrender and worship is vital to Y’shua being our Rest, Refuge, Savior, and King. Our constant communion with Him is vital to His love relationship with us; therefore, these are the targets at which satan is aiming.

Answering the question, “What is the Daily Sacrifice?” comes down to what word best represents those things that satan can take away. To me, that one word is Worship. To surrender to Yah’s dominion is to worship Him, to observe the Sabbath is to spend a whole day each week dedicated to worshiping Him, and to pray to and praise Him is to worship Him. Who we worship has always been and will be the central issue until Y’shua takes away satan, sin, and sinners for the final time. And finally, the really neat thing: if we will exercise our blood-bought privilege to worship Yah continually, satan is powerless to take it away!

Fear Yah, give Him glory, and worship Him
For the hour for Him to be judged has come and
He calls for His witnesses to testify in His behalf.
Come, let us stand together for Him!
